Hello, church, 8th July 2014

Proverbs 30:24-28 Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings' palaces.

We hardly have time left to pay attention to the small things since we are so used to great things and big dreams. Are small things important and to whom? Of course they are important and if not to all of us then to God. And why is that? Because God is the Creator and he makes things happen by just saying it. He made some things seem noticeable, others not so much, some are made for good use while others are not and so He is the Creator of all. Jesus himself tells those, who were following him not to write small things off as beneath their notice. Have you ever asked yourselves the question: “Why did God made people be born babies and then grow to become adults? God could have made people be born at the age of 20 and let them go live their own lives.” No, every little thing born into this world is small and helpless, isn’t it? It needs someone to take care of it in order to grow. God is taking care of everything on this Earth and this is the reason Jesus speaks the words “Do not be anxious about your life”.

Matthew 6:25-32 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

Little things are usually left unnoticed. Could that happen to us in everyday life, in church? Yes it could be and already is. Why? Because if you are already an adult, there are some, who are not yet adults. They also need to grow into adulthood the way you did. You cannot be asking of people, who have just seen God, to be perfect the way “you are” when you yourlself have had years and years of perfecting yourself and yet your life is still not perfect.  Despising someone means to scorn them. Jesus warned us not to do that:

Matthew 18:10-14 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. ”

The little ones should be not left to die, we should provide them with a good spiritual environment so that they could live and grow. Solomon speaks of four little things, which people discard or think unworthy of their attention, but they exist and they all have their meaning. How many of you pay attention to ants – yes, those ants you think about only when they start swarming over you when you decide to make a picnic next to their nest. It doesn’t feel good, does it? They are small, but they gather their food in summer so that they are provided for in winter. They don’t look strong, but they are wise. People don’t always seem much wiser than ants.  The rock badger is also small and weak. It has n tail and his skin is dark. His legs have no fur; his nails are flat except for the nail on his inner toe, which is long and bent. The rock badgers can’t dig, they live in holes in the rocks. Solomon calls them “people not mighty” but yet they are wise. They are easily scared but they know how to make their home secure. They are, but some people make the biggest messes when they want to make their place of living their home. The locusts can jump pretty high and can even be found on the third store of an apartment building. They have no king but they move together – they always look like they are marching in rank. It’s hard for most people to do that these days – be well organized. And the lizard, yes, the lizard is as scary as his big cousin the crocodile, but he is so small, that when you catch him you can see how vulnerable it is. Indeed, but if you try to get into the palace of the Queen of England, it wouldn’t be that easy if you have no invitation. Other come and go from that palace easily. It is good for us to think about the little things as the

Word tells us and learn from every little thing so we could grow wiser and know the Truth.

With lots of love, Pastor Vasil Petrov
